Umbrella project - coordination, scenarios and model-based integration

Objectives:

  • Technical/administrative and scientific project coordination
  • Scenario development and provision (CO2, climate, land and water use, restoration) incl. Stakeholder, decision maker and regional expert inclusion
  • Model-based synthesis as a basis for ecosystem stability analyses, the optimization of management options considering several key ecosystem services in parallel, and the analysis of transferability of project results to other systems 
  • Capacity building: Student exchange project with “summer projects” and summer schools in Namibia and Germany, joint MSc-, BSc-, and Honours- projects

Summary:

Strong overall coordination is required to achieve the OPTIMASS goal of successfully bridging geo- and biosciences as well as basic and applied research. The umbrella project provides both the technical and scientific coordination of OPTIMASS including the coordination of the direct involvement of stakeholders and decision makers. It is supposed to strongly contribute to capacity building by coordinating the scientific exchange program thereby facilitating education and networking across subproject teams and countries. 

The Umbrella project will also fulfill two crucial scientific tasks

  1.  the coordination of the joint development and provision of realistic scenarios of future climate, atmospheric CO2 levels, and land use, and
  2. the model-based integration of subproject results allowing for overarching assessment of sustainable management strategies for water and land use, quantifying risks of tipping points of catastrophic ecosystem shifts, and for testing the transferability of findings for other systems.
